Repair and Strengthening of Highway Bridges with FRP

چکیده

Two different design problems are commonly encountered by highway bridge maintenance engineers: the upgrade of existing members to handle increased load demand, or the repair of bridge members which have experienced impact events due to overheight vehicles. This paper shows that through the use of carbon fiber reinforced (CFRP) materials highway bridge girders can be effectively strengthened or repaired in flexure. Two ongoing research projects are described: the first involving the strengthening or repair of prestressed concrete bridge girders, and the second involving the strengthening of steel bridge girders. Design guidelines are presented for both techniques and show innovative use of the material characteristics of CFRP to suit the type of bridge and rehabilitation requirements.
